With more than 12 years experience in the forced induction industry, it was only natural that VF would branch out into turbo kits. VAG's new 2.0T with FSI management is a prime candidate for upgrades, and VF's relationship with GIAC USA, along with its use of stereo lithography apparatus (SLA), coordinate measuring machine (CMM) and Superflow air flow bench testing technologies means that it is one of the first to market a big-turbo kit for this already ubiquitous engine.
Through exhaustive testing, VF found that the combination of the OE KK3 turbo, injectors and fuel pump means there's not much room to make big horsepower gains through chip tuning alone. By combining Garrett's latest GT28RS/71 series “Disco Potato” turbo with VF-Engineering hardware and GIAC software, VF now has two unique and properly-engineered Big Turbo Kits to offer VW and Audi 2.0T owners.

The RS/S kit is built around the Garrett GT28RS/71 turbo and GIAC software. The VF RS/S kit combines the GT28RS/71, VF’s own cast manifold, uprated fuel pump, larger FSI injectors and GIAC software to provide an affordable and streetable upgrade for 2.0T owners. The more aggressive RS/R kit uses the same components as the RS/S kit, but adds stronger forged internals to take power levels well beyond anything currently available.
Garrett's GT28RS turbo is ideally suited to the 2.0 engine and features improved aerodynamics and a water-cooled ball bearing cartridge. This combination provides a dramatic reduction in turbo lag and a corresponding increase in operating efficiency. The 2.0T's FSI technology permits a relatively high compression ratio that contributes to almost instant throttle response, even when off boost. The GT28RS/71’s ball bearing cartridge and aerodynamic profile combine with FSI technology to provide virtually lag-free response. When it comes to modern turbocharger technology, the Garrett GT-series cannot be beaten. In short, there is no better-matched turbo for the 2.0T than Garrett's GT28RS/71 and this is why VF-Engineering has chosen it as the basis for its new RS/S and RS/R 2.0T “Big Turbo” kits.
As is typical for a VF-Engineering kit, fit and finish are OE-quality and the same can be said for drivability. In simple terms, the VF-Engineering 2.0T GT28RS Turbo System is fully complete and comes with everything needed for a factory-style installation. VF provides a cast alloy manifold that fits like stock and seamlessly mates the GT28RS with OEM studs and copper lock nuts to the 2.0T cylinder head. The turbocharger unit is plumbed with oil and water feed and return lines manufactured by VF-Engineering to suit OEM fitment specifications. All new gaskets, crush washers and single use parts are provided. A VF-custom CNC-machined 304 stainless steel flange is used to connect the factory downpipe flange to the turbo using new hardware (provided). An OEM solution for fuel supply was chosen. This entailed working with the OEM manufacturer and VF’s subsequent design and testing of a higher capacity direct replacement fuel pump and higher-flowing fuel injectors.
Every aspect of this kit has
been fully engineered for high quality fitment and highly demanding
performance and expectation. VF's in-house horizontal, turning
and milling CNC's and plastic molding plant, GIAC's industry
reputation and track record and Garrett's reliability have
been fully exploited to create a product with internationally
un-rivaled material technology, quality and performance.
The RS/R kit is built around the existing Garrett GT28 series turbo, injectors, fuel pump and hardware from the RS/S kit combined with new GIAC software. The RS/R kit takes the 2.0T motor to power levels beyond the expectation of most enthusiasts by doubling horsepower. Compared to a stock 2.0T, the VF-E RS/R kit adds 201-hp and 145 lb-ft of torque!

Performance, reliability and an OE feel are major factors in the extensive R&D carried out by VF-Engineering. The custom and proprietary GIAC software supplied with this kit safely realigns all fueling and engine management parameters. Unlike other forced induction solutions, VF-Engineering's kit is designed to work safely within VAG's OEM parameters, thus minimizing the likelihood of spurious diagnostic trouble codes (DTC's) or check engine lights (CEL's). GIAC software is installed quickly and easily via their new CAN-compatible flashing tool.
“CAN Switching” is the latest technology released from the GIAC labs, giving the user an ability to safely switch between ECU program modes. “Race” mode enables the user to take advantage of more aggressive programming afforded by higher-octane fuels, “Kill” mode immobilizes the vehicle for anti-theft purposes, and “Valet” mode softens throttle response for those times when the user would rather not fully enable his or her vehicle’s available performance.
